ADULT & CHILD COUNSELLING
You or your child may be experiencing difficult feelings in relation to bereavement, disability / SEN, Autism, ADHD, critical or complex health condition, trauma, abuse, family conflict or breakdown, anxiety, depression, bullying, harassment or generally feeling overwhelmed or stressed. You may not even know what is causing you to feel like things are more difficult than usual.
Counselling therapy sessions with a professional and experienced counsellor can provide the opportunity for change towards achieving a balanced state of emotional and mental health well-being.
Counselling can also be helpful if you are indirectly affected, for example living with someone who is experiencing distress or other difficult feelings in response to an event.
ADULT COUNSELLING
BENEFITS :
- Counselling can bring clarity.
- It can be empowering in recognising steps towards achieving change.
- Assist in finding coping strategies for managing difficult situations / difficult feelings.
- Sessions can lead to achieving an increased awareness of self and behaviour patterns, as well as an increased acceptance of self and enhanced relationships with others.
- Support in accessing and developing resilience to overcome the feeling of being overpowered by difficult and traumatic events.
- Feel understood through a collaborative, non-judgemental, confidential and understanding approach to therapy.
I am experienced in using a variety of therapeutic approaches including talking therapy, creative arts therapy and sand tray therapy. I am also experienced in using guided relaxation/grounding techniques (often helpful in relation to trauma counselling or anxiety related difficulties).
All approaches to counselling are undertaken in collaboration with the client.
CHILDREN / TEENS COUNSELLING
Often children and teenagers demonstrate behaviours that are difficult to understand. This is a common response to trying to cope in difficult situations or distress.
Commonly, behaviours manifest in withdrawal (including difficulties accessing education), more confrontational style behaviours, favouring fantasy worlds (day dreaming), finding it difficult to concentrate, nightmares, difficulty sleeping and other changes in behaviour.
Stress and emotional dysregulation can result in having thoughts or acting on self harm or suicidal behaviour.
At times where you may experience your child as difficult to understand you may feel helpless to know how to help them. You may also feel frustrated about navigating appropriate support in place for your child.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have further questions
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE INITIAL SESSION?
Adults Counselling :
It is important that you find a counsellor that you can trust and that you feel you can work with. An introductory session can give you the opportunity to ask questions, and to make sure you feel comfortable before going ahead. It can also be useful in gaining an understanding of the counselling process.
Children / Teen Counselling :
It is important that both you and your child trusts the counsellor you choose. Depending on their age and situation, an initial session is undertaken with parent/carer and child. This is an opportunity to discuss objectives, arrange sessions and reviews.
I hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate.
HOW LONG AND FREQUENT ARE SESSIONS?
Sessions are 50 minutes (adults) and recommended weekly as this format is proven effective. Life can be busy and this may not be possible, in these cases, frequency can be agreed in the initial session.
Short term and long term counselling is available. Regular reviews can be factored in which can be a good way to track progress and helpfulness of the sessions.
Counselling sessions are available in the following format:
- video call
- telephone call
ARE SESSIONS CONFIDENTIAL?
I am a member of professional counselling body, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and adhere to their ethical code of practice. Whilst sessions are confidential there are exceptions, for example if I was concerned about risk of harm either to yourself or someone else, in which case relevant parties would be notified.
HOW CAN COUNSELLING HELP ME?
Naturally, life events can impact emotions and mental health well-being. When tended to through professional and experienced counselling, an improved sense of well-being and relief from difficult feelings can be achieved. Counselling can help towards bringing clarity and making change in the way you respond to situations.
"If we focus on 'being', then we won’t get so caught up in the diversions of life ... that we lose sight of existence itself. Not falling into the 'everydayness’ of life and becoming unfree-like the sheep.”
