What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, self-control, and emotional regulation. While everyone experiences occasional difficulty concentrating or moments of impulsiveness, for those with ADHD, these symptoms are persistent and can significantly impact daily life. ADHD can often make it difficult to meet academic or professional goals, maintain relationships, and manage emotions effectively.

Key Symptoms of ADHD

  • Inattention: Difficulty sustaining focus, following instructions, or organising tasks.

  • Hyperactivity: Excessive movement, fidgeting, or difficulty staying seated.

  • Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting conversations, or struggling to wait one’s turn.

While ADHD is often diagnosed in childhood, many adults discover they have ADHD later in life as they encounter challenges in the workplace or with personal relationships.

What Are the Different Types of ADHD?

ADHD is classified into three primary types, reflecting the diversity of symptoms individuals may experience:

  1. Predominantly Inattentive Presentation
Individuals with this subtype often appear forgetful or easily distracted. They may have difficulty staying organised, completing tasks, or listening attentively.

  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation
Those with this type tend to exhibit restlessness and impulsive behaviours. This can include constant fidgeting, interrupting others, or struggling to remain still.

  3. Combined Presentation
This is the most common subtype, where individuals exhibit a mix of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, requiring a comprehensive approach to therapy.

Our Approach To ADHD Therapy

At A Stone's Throw Therapy we take a personalised collaborative and empathic approach to clients who are struggling with ADHD-related challenges. This ensures that you will receive the tailored approach you need.

Therapy offered is an integrative-based approach. Sessions are interactive & draw on experience in Attachment, Systemic, Transactional Analysis, and Person-Centered Therapy. In sessions, Mind-Body, Somatic, and Mindfulness-Based led practice, in addition to Creative Therapy practices can be used to process body and cognitive responses to ADHD symptoms. This can be undertaken in conjunction with talking therapy.

All of these techniques and practices are individualised, recognising that each person experiences themselves differently and may need or want different support.

The overall aim is to empower understanding and address unhelpful or damaging thought patterns or behaviours.
